Exercise Ideas for Those Sheltering in Place

Written By Chiropractic USA on June 19, 2020

Exercises at homeFor many, sheltering in place means staying in, watching television, or playing with the kids in the back yard. One common issue that many are struggling with, however, is finding the time to commit to daily exercise.

Recent studies have shown that since the nationwide quarantine was enacted, activity levels amongst those in the U.S. have dropped by 39%. The study also showed that people were sleeping more, with the average time spent asleep increasing by approximately 20%.

Why Exercise Matters Now More than Ever

With millions of people having to shelter in place during the current pandemic, many of those who were accustomed to working out at gyms or other healthcare facilities have since lost access to their equipment and even their desire to maintain their exercise routine. For those who didn’t have an exercise routine prior to the shelter in place, you may notice that you’re spending more time sitting or lying down than you were before.

This generates more sedentary time spent on the couch, in bed, and partaking in other activities that, when done in excess, can cause harm to the body. Before you know it, you may experience weight gain, muscle atrophy (for those who have stopped their usual exercise routine), and even new musculoskeletal aches and pains.

Getting Started with Exercise While Sheltering in Place

If you’re looking to start a new exercise routine while sheltering in place, then you’re in luck! Establishing a new exercise routine is as easy as taking that first step.

The easiest way to get started with exercising during this time is to get out and go for a walk. Thirty minutes or less is a great way to get started.

If you’re looking to get out and explore nature, going for a bike ride or taking a hike is another great way to get active without having to overextend yourself or your budget.

For those looking for a more “classroom” experience, then there are countless online at home workout programs available from reputable companies to help you get active with at-home classes in weight training, cardio, yoga, and more.
